Roush Review: American Horror Story Finale

Jessica Lange What a sick little show American Horror Story turned out to be. Ludicrous from top to bottom, from haunted attic to cellar, from start to finish, as the population of ghosts in the Murder House grew nearly as large as the Downton Abbey estate. In the finale, it was finally Ben Harmon's turn to die, after being warned by Constance (Jessica Lange, always the best thing in this wacky series) to take the surviving baby and run. "How can you still be so blind?" she shrieked. (We've been saying that all season.) He did try to escape, after flirting briefly with suicide (and pulled back from the brink by the ghost of his long-suffering wife), but the bad ghosts got him, hanging him from the chandelier and turning him into one of their own. And so the ill-fated addle-brained Harmons end up quasi-happily ever after in the hereafter. In the show's one clever twist, the Harmons (Ben, Vivien, Violet) join forces to become ghostly ghost-busters, scaring away the new family that moved in, Beetlejuice-style. Didn't see that coming. And in a three-years-later flash-forward, Constance is now raising the Demon Spawn, who shows his true colors by slaughtering the nanny and grinning through the blood as Constance clucks, "Now what am I going to do with you?" If Season 2 is going to be Jessica Lange-Meets-The Omen, and we can put that ridiculous Murder House in the rear-view mirror, that might actually be worth watching. What did you think of the American Horror Story finale?Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

'21 Jump Street' Poster: Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum Go to the Promenade

The arrival '21 Jump Street' movie continunes the current Hollywood trend of "Let's remake an 80s property!" Fortunately -- or, according to what you are talking with, unluckily -- I haven't seen the first '21 Jump Street,' meaning this film isn't wrecking my recollections or tainted by any preconceived notions I'd in regards to the series. But following a truly hysterical red-colored-colored-band trailer, and, now, a significant funny movie poster (that's, to date as "funny" movie posters go), there have to be some detractors available that are maybe, possibly, beginning later on around. Right? The poster, which you'll want to see entirely below, shows Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill), two cops disguised as students going to the promenade. The tagline virtually talks alone hooray for grade-school humor! '21 Jump Street,' which stars Tatum, Hill, Brie Larson and Ice Cube (together with a cameo from original cast member The Actor-kaira Pitt), hits theaters March 16, 2012. "Once you go from writing to surviving the shoot and editing the production, it's all hard.""W.E." will rehabilitate the duchess' reputation, said Andrea Riseborough, who plays Simpson -- the twice-divorced woman who prompted King Edward VIII to abdicate in 1937."The propaganda fed to the British public -- but also internationally -- by Stanley Baldwin affected our opinion of Wallis Simpson," she said at the Cinema Society event. "We were subjected to a huge amount of propaganda without our knowing it." As for the duchess in exile, the actress added, "She married someone she truly loved but there was an emptiness in that she could never live up to the pressure of having to be as exciting as a kingship."Valentino, who met Simpson in '68 ("She did several dresses of mine"), recalled a not particularly happy couple. Jackson Family Asks For Stiff Sentence Against Conrad Murray

First Published: November 29, 2011 12:28 PM EST Credit: Getty Images Caption Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan, Dr. Conrad Murray and defense attorney Ed Chernoff in court on November 3, 2011 in Los AngelesLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- A lawyer for Michael Jacksons family on Tuesday told a judge sentencing the doctor who caused the singers death that the family is not seeking revenge but wants a stiff sentence that serves as a warning to opportunistic doctors. The Bible reminds us that men cannot do justice, they can only seek justice, the family said in a statement read by attorney Brian Panish. That is all we can ask as a family, and that is all we ask for here. The statement went on to say, We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do today that will bring Michael back. Panish did not specifically request the maximum term of four years in jail for Murray but said the cardiologist should be punished in a way that reminds physicians that they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor was expected to sentence Murray later in the day after hearing from lawyers on both sides of the case. Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after a six-week trial that presented the most detailed account yet of Jacksons final hours but left many questions about Murrays treatment of the superstar with an operating-room anesthetic as he battled chronic insomnia. Prosecutors want Pastor to sentence Murray to a maximum four-year term that likely would be cut at least in half due to jail overcrowding. Defense attorneys want probation for the cardiologist, saying he will lose his ability to practice medicine and likely face a lifetime of ostracism. Several members of Jacksons family, including mother Katherine and siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie, attended the proceedings. Murray stared straight ahead as Deputy District Attorney David Walgren told the judge that Murray lacked remorse throughout the case. The doctor wore a suit in court. Jacksons death in June 2009 stunned the world, as did the ensuing investigation that led to Murray being charged in February 2010. Murray told detectives he had been giving the singer nightly doses of propofol to help him sleep as he prepared for a series of comeback concerts. Propofol is supposed to be used in hospital settings and has never been approved for sleep treatments, yet Murray acknowledged giving it to Jackson then leaving the room on the day the singer died. Murray declined to testify during his trial but did opt to participate in a documentary in which he said he didnt consider himself guilty of any crime and blamed Jackson for entrapping him into administering the propofol doses. His attorneys contended throughout the case that Jackson must have given himself the fatal dose when Murray left the singers bedside. In their sentencing memorandum, prosecutors cited Murrays statements to advocate that he receive the maximum term. They also want him to pay restitution to the singers three children Prince, Paris and Blanket. Its unlikely that Murray can pay any sizable sum, including the $1.8 million cost of his funeral. He was deeply in debt when he agreed to serve as Jacksons personal physician for $150,000 a month, and the singer died before Murray received any money. During Murrays trial, a jury heard a slurred recording of Jackson found on Murrays cellphone. The doctor or his attorneys never explained in court why he recorded the impaired singer six weeks before his death, but it revealed the ambition of the entertainer who burst on the scene as a baby-faced member of the Jackson Five in the 1970s. We have to be phenomenal, he was heard saying about his This Is It concerts in London. When people leave this show, when people leave my show, I want them to say, Ive never seen nothing like this in my life. Go. Go. Ive never seen nothing like this. Go. Its amazing. Hes the greatest entertainer in the world. Jacksons comeback attempt came after he had been pushed into obscurity. Despite his acquittal of child molestation in 2005, Jackson went into seclusion, leaving his lavish manor Neverland Ranch and moving to the Middle East and Las Vegas, where he first met Murray. Prosecutors said the mens relationship was corrupted by greed. Murray left his practices to serve as Jacksons doctor and look out for his well-being, but instead acted as an employee catering to the singers desire to receive propofol to put him to sleep, prosecutors said. The defendant has displayed a complete lack of remorse for causing Michael Jacksons death, prosecutors wrote in a filing last week. Even worse than failing to accept even the slightest level of responsibility, (Murray) has placed blame on everyone else, including the one person no longer here to defend himself, Michael Jackson. Murrays attorneys are relying largely on 34 letters from relatives, friends and former patients to portray Murray in a softer light and win a lighter sentence. The letters and defense filings describe Murrays compassion as a doctor, including accepting lower payments from his mostly poor patients. There is no question that the death of his patient, Mr. Jackson, was unintentional and an enormous tragedy for everyone affected, defense attorneys wrote in their sentencing memo. Dr. Murray has been described as a changed, grief-stricken man, who walks aroundunder a pall of sadness since the loss of his patient, Mr. Jackson. Pastor also will review a report by probation officials that carries a sentencing recommendation. The report will become public after Murray is sentenced. ___ Follow Anthony McCartney at http://twitter.com/mccartneyAP Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. What is the news that Relativity Media had selected Linyi, an urban area of ten million, like a spot for its film and was offering its close government connections comes at any time when activists have restored their attention on Chen. ParaNorman Trailer: Norman of the Living Dead!

It doesn’t hit theaters until August 2012, but the first trailer for ParaNorman, Focus’s animated followup to 9 and Coraline, is a playful stop-motion glimpse into the mind of a boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who can speak to the dead. He’s called upon when his town comes under zombie siege. Thus far, it looks about as droll and fun as James and the Giant Peach, which is about the best compliment I can give. Effective use of Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” wouldn’t you say? Norman’s such a cute little scamp here, resembling something between young Butch Patrick and young Wil Wheaton. I think that’s right? They’ve definitely engineered him with child star credibility. Only ten more months until we find out just how spooky Norman’s world is. The Sam Fell-directed cast includes Casey Affleck, Alex Borstein, Jodelle Ferland, Tempestt Bledsoe, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, Bernard Hill, and Anna Kendrick. Justin Timberlake's 'In Time' & 10 Other Really Perplexing Movie Premises

Initially, Justin Timberlake's new sci-fi action flick was referred to as "Now." Apparently, though, that title didn't effectively communicate just what the movie involved, which isn't exactly surprising because just what the movie, now referred to as "With Time,Inch is all about is kinda high-concept and confusing. Go for us (and JT) for just about any second. In this film future, overpopulation will be a biiiiiiig problem, so scientists determined the best way to slice and dice an individuals genome to the level where aging stops when you're 25. Since people like living and shouldn't die youthful, time is nearly the brand new currency, something acquired throughout work and spent like cash. Just how time might be acquired, stolen and saved an eye on around the fancy neon clock inside your arm (additionally to why everyone afterwards is actually damn attractive) is not really referred to. And why if it's? Confounding high-concept plots certainly are a Hollywood staple. In this sense, "Over TimeInch joins the sometimes glorious, sometimes grating pantheon of movies with really perplexing premises. "The Jacket": An amnesic Gulf War veteran takes an experimental drug, locks themselves in the morgue chamber and has the ability to travel 15 a substantially very long time, where he finds out he might be dead in one timeline while not another. Or something like that like this. Somebody revoke Adrien Brody's Oscar. "Primer": An excellent low-budget time-travel flick so sciencey you will need a PhD or two tabs of acidity to understand it. "Lost in Space": As if the vista of Joey from "Pals" becoming an action hero isn't perplexing enough, this adaptation introduces another-act time-travel plotline making less sense than Herman Cain's tax plan. Why, Gary Oldman, why? "Beginning": Really the only factor much better than this dream-within-a-dream-within-a-bunch-of-other-dreams movie happens when the hell Christopher Nolan attracted everything off. "Donnie Darko: Can it be too harsh to convey that anyone who thinks this is often a fantastically produced work where suburban alienation and sci-fi mindf--k dovetail to make a generation-identifying film is certainly a fool? Well i suppose. The film can't make sense. As well as the rabbit factor is silly. "Detention": Just watch a clip after which it attempt to explain just what the eff that movie is about. "The Thirteenth Floor: This is often a prime instance of an undesirable-good sci-fi film. Don't request why nobody in this virtual-reality story never traveled outdoors of town to discover oh shiz! they live in virtual reality too. "Johnny Mnemonic": Who'd allow any sensitive information being posted for safe-keeping into Keanu Reeve's brain? Maybe if David Fincher or David Wain remade this movie, it might be darkly creepy or darkly absurd, there's however grounds Robert Longo has only been allowed to produce one movie since it. "The Fountain": It'd take a lot more caffeine than could be acquired at our local Local coffee shop only to summon up enough energy to sum up what's goes reduced this time around around-hopping movie aboutwell, honestly, we're not able to. Deal with it. Every David Lynch movie ever: I'm speaking about, amiright?!

First Tintin Reviews: Spielberg's Herg Adaptation Reminiscent of Indiana Jones, But Is the Mo-Cap Up to Snuff?

The first batch of reviews are in for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited big-budget adventure that attempts to revive the charming Herg character (first introduced in 1929) with the most advanced motion capture technology money can buy. So what did the earlybird critics have to say? Thanks in part to the director’s storytelling ability, the well-executed action sequences (sometimes done in impossibly long takes) and the brilliance of mo-cap king Andy Serkis, it sounds as though the first Tintin has succeeded as an entertaining Spielberg film. But because of the limitations of motion capture — even in its most advanced current state — Tintin also fails to meet the revolutionary filmmaking expectations set for Spielberg’s first foray into the format. Following the first screening in Belgium on October 10, a number of reviews have surfaced ranging from mixed-positive to positive. The most critical write-up of the film yet comes from The Telegraph which gave Tintin a 3/5 rating: …there’s a mechanistic quality to Spielberg’s craft that’s undoubtedly disappointing: a film directed by one such distinctive artist and based on the work of another shouldn’t feel like it could have been made by almost anyone. The main personality-stifler is the film’s use of performance capture; the method by which the cast’s movements and expressions have been translated into computer-generated visuals. However much more successful the technique is here than it has been elsewhere, crucially it’s not successful enough: even if Jamie Bell wasn’t so monotonously earnest as Tintin, he’d still look about as conscious as a bollard with a quiff. Even so, the U.K. paper notes that the film’s “breakneck pace” works favorably and that the “stuffiest 3-D refuseniks” will appreciate “a terrific motorbike chase through a Moroccan marketplace, presented in one impossible, continuous take” and a “hallucinatory sequence that brings galleons crashing through the moonlit Saharan dunes is pure blockbusting spectacle.” Variety is more forgiving of the motion capture, noting that audiences might question the format until “Snowy, Tintin’s faithful white terrier, performs antics not even the best-trained pooch could perform and the sets, stunts and action sequences become ever more lavish.” “The worst” that Variety says of the film is that “the action is so relentless, it nearly comes to feel like a videogame as it leaps from one challenge to the next.” Even so, the “consistently stylish and richly detailed design work” will more than make up for the pace. Like other reviewers, HitFix claims that Tintin follows the original Indiana Jones template more than the Spielberg franchise’s last, disappointing installment Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, “in which Harrison Ford’s eyes appeared deader than those of any mo-cap mannequin.” HitFix also credits Spielberg for sharing Herg’s “story-loyal earnestness,” a commonality which allows the charming cartoon character to make his hi-tech feature film debut organically enough. Even if the mo-cap characters are not that appealing, the “film’s smashing key set piece […] fully justify this technological leap of faith, while also successfully adapting the distinctive flat-color textures of Herg’s trademark ligne claire drawing style.” And then there are the unabashed raves from ScreenJabber.com (“The Adventures of Tintin is an absolute belter. […] It’s slick, exciting, laugh-out-loud funny, sympathetic to its origins, superbly voiced and leaves you wanting more.”) and The Sun (“…laughs aplenty.”) Which review do you trust most? From Pillbox Hat to Bullet Bra: The Anatomy of the Pan Am Stewardess Uniform

Christina Ricci For Pan Am star Christina Ricci, putting on the airline's legendary '60s flight attendant uniforms not just make her fit the part, but additionally have the part. Also it all starts with compressing in to the in the past accurate under garments. "We now have these undergarments that people put on, a girdle along with a longline bra," Ricci told reporters in September. "The girdle keeps you against doing anything boyish like run or jump or take any large plane tickets of stairs. The longline is really a bra mounted on a small-corset therefore it essentially enables you to operate really, really straight. ... You need to walk just like a lady whatsoever occasions, so immediately you are just put in this mindset of 'I'm a girl. I sit a particular way. I walk a particular way.'" PHOTOS: Meet your Pan Am flight crew In Sunday's episode "Ich Bin Ein Berliner" (10/9c on ABC), the crew transports journalists to Berlin to pay for Leader Kennedy's speech. We're not more excited than Maggie (Ricci), who had campaigned for him and it is going to meet him personally. For Pan Am costume designer Ane Crabtree, the power and excitement throughout that period of options (a fledgling NASA, youthful and charming JFK) is reflected in the youth, for example Maggie, as well as their styles. "Pan Am was very stylish and awesome as well as the occasions," Crabtree informs TVGuide.com. "They transformed using what was happening popular." Take a look at Crabtree's experience into individuals tunis blue uniforms, in the tops of the carefully built hats, lower beyond the gossamer thin tights and also to the sensible, not-too-sharp footwear. What kind of research was involved with re-creating these uniforms?Ane Crabtree: We are so lucky because Nancy Ganis, who's our executive producer and who produced this story, would be a Pan Am stewardess. We'd use of an authentic uniform [and] every inch was measured and captured pics of. ... Also, I've maybe every book available around the good reputation for air travel uniforms, uniforms generally as well as on air travel stewardesses. Finally, we checked out old footage, old documentaries around the air travel industry that people can all get online now. Were the initial, real-existence Pan Am uniforms made to fit the bill versus good-searching? Did they need them simple to clean?Crabtree: It's all regulated of individuals things. Any uniform, be it military or perhaps a flight attendant, an airplane pilot uniform, a janitor's uniform, they needed to fit the bill. Of these busy people they produced these uniforms that will stand the exam of lengthy hrs. They'd look crisp, and delightful, and feminine on these crazy lengthy plane tickets. And simple to wash, yes. VIDEO: Former Pan Am stewardess Sheila Riley on finding yourself in Berlin throughout JFK's speech Were they made to project a particular image?Crabtree: These were searching to project a picture from the perfect ladylike associated with Pan Am: chic, quiet, elegant. That bestows confidence on Pan Am patrons, because, remember, not a lot of people have been flying for very lengthy [in 1963]. So, there is very much of much more of in-flight worry possibly. I really like the small hats. Do you know me about individuals?Crabtree: In '63, you were not permitted to possess your hat too much on back of the mind, and also the hair do needed to opt for that. It had been really designed to mix the hairline, kind of two fingers over the eyebrow would be a perfect place for this to land. Which was before uniform transformed in '65 where it sitting further back like Jackie O. What type of time adopts creating one the hats? They appear very polished.Crabtree: They are such pieces of art. The stars are extremely freaked by the hat. I am speaking men and women are just like, "Oh please, please allow me to put on the hat!" They're so precise and built-in that old type of millinery standards. There's one guy in L.A. who means they are. You will find small, small trapunto stitching, rows and rows which i hope you'll have the ability to see on camera, that form this beautiful shape. The material needs to be dyed this very, very specific Pan Am tunis blue since it does not exist anywhere. And also the buttons need to be hands-cast. Beginning with Episode 5, we now have the beautiful hatpin on the rear of the stewardess cap which was fashioned after stewardess Sheila Riley's personal Pan Am pin she used on the airplane to Berlin. Besides choosing the best shade of blue, what else have you search for within the fabric for that uniforms?Crabtree: We adopted the guideline from the original having a lightweight twill to ensure that it may be versatile for weather and, also, comfortable for that stars. [It's] lengthy-lasting for that incredibly harsh existence from the show. [We are] shooting 12 to 18 hrs each day and they are putting on them all day long. We simply needed a great fabric to ensure that we wouldn't make our stars sick, really, using the weather changes. Then you will find individuals whitened accents - the blouse and mitts. Are they not hard to keep clean?Crabtree: The blouses are whitened pique and delightful, however the fabric is really it's almost sculptural and circles your body for the reason that way and does not wrinkle greatly. The while mitts needed to be washed and pressed, that is vital because getting millions of extra supplies - not only the stewardesses - but many of folks in whitened mitts in street clothes, individuals mitts get so dirty. You cannot even think of the sweat, and makeup, and food. So, they needed to be really washed, bleached out, constantly. Christina Ricci talked about the underwear's historic precision too. How important could it have been to recreate these clothes thinking about the crowd does not see them?Crabtree: [It is important to construct internally of these stars since it is so mental. They are very youthful kids. These were never around within the '60s. There's another physicality in the '60s to now in the way we hold ourselves. And also the clothes just fit better [with one of these undergarments] surprisingly. It isn't something which I'd readily think about this year, however, you know with this particular whole preponderance of Spanx, it can make things better. The reason behind the girdle was to ensure that they did not jiggle since it wasn't ladylike. The girdle just stored everything very, not far from your body and contained. And if you have a bullet bra on, the industry longline, you did not desire to be poking using your bra whether it was cold if guess what happens I am talking about. So, individuals brazier were thicker than we now have today. With individuals bullet brazier, you need to stand straight otherwise you look silly also it ruins the road. Within the pilot, Miss Havemayer (Veanne Cox) alerts Colette (Karine Vanasse) against putting on tights which are darker and uneven. Can you explain that?Crabtree: Tights may be worn whatsoever occasions. In one of individuals old manuals, I just read this excellent quote, "A subdued, light color beautifies and provides an all natural good turn to the legs." So that they did not want darker and uneven, that is what Miss Havemeyer states within the pilot, plus they did not want too light. They simply wanted a subtle, beautiful color around the legs. A dark color wasn't preferred since it is too fashion-y or too fancy, too tawdry. It certainly is kind of rounding to the not ladylike effect. The number of pairs of tights would you undergo on the program?Crabtree: We put on real tights that do not have stretch. You realize stretch could be a lot simpler, however, stretch can have as shinier on camera which would not be in keeping with the time. They should be sheer, but because they are so sheer and thus delicate, they rip. We undergo two pairs of tights per girl, daily. It will get very costly because they are delicate. We are rising and lower stairs millions of occasions, doing a variety of crazy things. So, you'll need doubles because they'll shred when you're getting your footwear on. Would you like Pan Am? Election for this within our Fall TV Recognition Contest! OK, so don't put on your hat long ago, avoid dark or ripped tights and not forget your girdle. The other uniform violations did the stewardesses need to avoid?Crabtree: The uniform jacket and skirt could not be too tight because that might be considered inelegant. It could not pull within the bra area. Who does want that? Also it could not be too tight within the derrière if it's too tight within the girdle, it shows and you wouldn't want that either. Also, you could not have fancy jewellery. You possessed a very simple watch and small ear-rings. The footwear needed to be neat and polished. Very military, right? 2 to 3 inch heel, slender, much less pointed. Sharp footwear were in, however they did not want the severe - what did they known as them? - roach murders, what are sharp ones. Finally, the wings needed to be around the left lapel from the stewardess jacket. Once the jacket comes off it needed to be around the blouse. Overall, how would be the stars liking these costumes? Can there be anybody who particular takes towards the uniform?Crabtree: There is no complaints. They love the uniform, thankfully. They are designed to measure around the women [so] they aren't uncomfortable. Each one has their very own pattern for everything: the hat, the bra, the suit jacket, the skirt. I believe Karine looks naturally comfortable in her own uniform, like she is made to become a stewardess, possibly. What's typically the most popular item? Maybe there is any versions designed for fans to buy?Crabtree: Typically the most popular item was, and most likely still could be, the Pan Am bag because which was a huge factor before the show started. Individuals would be the calls I make the most: "Are you able to please hold one for me personally? Are you able to discover where I'm able to acquire one?Inch I believe that will be giant because it already is. But, also, I am getting demands for men saying, "How can i obtain a uniform for my girlfriend? I would like her to got married for the reason that and me inside a pilot uniform." I kid explore. I believe it will likely be giant for Halloween, the entire uniform. Is not that crazy? Take a look at Ricci putting on her uniform within this sneak look of Sunday's "Ich Bin Ein Berliner": Pan Am airs every sunday at 10/9c on ABC. What's your preferred area of the Pan Am stewardess uniform? Can you put on the uniform for Halloween? What about the wedding?

Werner Herzog To Play One Shot's Villain

He'll go against Cruise's Jack ReacherThe clock in our head says it's time for another Jack Reacher casting story for One Shot. The first cinematic outing for Lee Child's hero, it's already got Tom Cruise starring and Christopher McQuarrie writing and directing. But now there's another director aboard: Werner Herzog will play the bad guy in the film, in news as weird as it is awesome. The cast already includes Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, Alexia Fast and Jai Courtney, but it will be Herzog taking the role of Zec, a former prisoner of war who plays a key role in framing a sniper for five murders - a decision, we're guessing, he will come to regret when Reacher gets involved. It's Herzog's first major role, but hey!If you're going to go, go big. McQuarrie apparently asked him aboard as a result of long fandom of the German auteur and current documentary king, and we're rather fascinated to see what he does with it. One Shot is due out in February 2013, which is going to be a very long wait for Reacher fans, accustomed as they are to at least one book per year. Don't forget, by the by, that Reacher creator Lee Child will be visiting Empire Towers this Friday at 1pm to answer your questions in webchat form.

Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos)

A La Zanfona Producciones and Producciones de la 5ta Avenida production. (International sales: Latinofusion, Jalisco, Mexico.) Produced by Gervasio Iglesias, Inti Herrera. Executive producers, Iglesias, Herrera, Claudia Calvino. Directed, written by Alejandro Brugues. With: Alexis Dias de Villegas, Jorge Molina, Andrea Duro, Andros Perugorria, Jazz Vila, Eliecer Ramirez.A great title, a novel setting and some surprisingly blunt digs at Castro's Cuban land of non-opportunity aren't enough to save "Juan of the Dead" from being a lowbrow zombie comedy that mostly goes where many others have gone before. Written and directed by Alejandro Brugues ("Personal Belongings"), this Spain-Cuba co-production scores a few laughs, but the weak script's scant narrative drive and crude humor are best suited to the undiscriminating. Nonetheless, pic should pick up a fair number of offshore deals for various formats, with distribs in several territories signing or negotiating after its Toronto preem. Fortysomething Havana slacker Juan (Alexis Dias de Villegas) is an amiable ne'er-do-well whose wife and child left him for greener pastures abroad long ago. He and perpetually horny dim-bulb friend Lazaro (Jorge Molina) scrape by through variably legal odd jobs including fishing; when they reel in a ravenous zombie, their curious response is no more than a shrugged "Let's not tell anyone about this." It's everyone's business soon enough, though, as an undead epidemic begins decimating the city's population shortly thereafter. In the screenplay's most amusing stroke, government authorities and media immediately insist the marauders are merely "dissidents" bent on undermining the communist state at the behest of a certain evil empire just up north. Their sticking to that party line, no matter how dire things get, is an inspired running gag; subversive nods to Cuba's perpetually broken-down infrastructure and make-do citizenry are also good for some chuckles. Juan susses a rare private business opening to be seized in the general chaos, setting up himself, Lazaro and latter's lanky son (Andros Perugorria) as a zombie cleanup crew with the motto "We kill your loved ones." Pushing their way in as partners are shrill neighborhood tranny La China (Jazz Vila) and her pal El Primo (Eliecer Ramirez), a huge muscleman who faints at the site of blood. Also joining, albeit reluctantly, is Juan's now-grown daughter, Camila (Andrea Duro), whose holiday to visit Grandma has been extended indefinitely by the crisis. Fairly plotless hijinks ensue, with occasional good lines and one great little setpiece (a unique mass-zombie beheading) outweighed by homophobic and otherwise puerile jokes and routine splatstick. Obviously this isn't Noel Coward, but Brugues could have aimed a little higher; there's precious little wit, originality or cinematic style even attempted here, though the energy level remains decently high. Perfs and packaging are adequate, with CGI effects ranging from competent to subpar.Camera (color), Carles Gusi; editor, Mercedes Cantero; music, Sergio Valdes; production designer, Derubin Jacome; costume designer, Esther Vaquero; sound, Daniel de Zayas; special effects supervisor, Juan Carlos Sanchez; visual effects supervisor, Juan Ventura; makeup effects, Cristian Perez Jauregui; assistant director, Olga Sanchez; casting, Libia Batista. Violet & Daisy

A Magic Violet presentation in association with GreeneStreet Films. (International sales: CAA, Los Angeles.) Produced by Geoffrey Fletcher, Bonnie Timmermann. Executive producers, John Penotti, James Skotchdopole. Co-producer, Steve Kempf. Directed, written by Geoffrey Fletcher.Daisy Saoirse Ronan Violet Alexis Bledel Michael James Gandolfini Iris Marianne Jean-Baptiste Russ Danny Trejo April Tatiana MaslanyFollowing his Oscar-winning script for "Precious," Geoffrey Fletcher's directorial debut manages to be precious in a whole different way, sadly far-removed from the approach he took adapting the novel "Push" by Sapphire. Last and least in a run of pics that fancy teen girls as cold-blooded killers, "Violet & Daisy" offers a questionably sentimental spin on the Hit Girl gimmick seen in "Kick-Ass," casting the armed-and-dangerous stars of "Sin City" (Alexis Bledel) and "Hanna" (Saoirse Ronan) as a pair of implausible assassins. This cutesy dark comedy seems destined for cult status, but could also connect with less Puritanical overseas auds. Written pre-"Precious" in a way that could've been made for virtually no money, "Violet & Daisy" benefits from Fletcher's recent fame, which enables the NYU Tisch grad to shoot his skewed fable in NY with a name cast and decent budget. Frankly, you'd never guess the two pics came from the same pen, so different is this uneasy blend of the hitman and coming-of-age genres. Still relatively new to the whole contract killing thing, Daisy (Ronan) blazes her way through the opening scene like an old pro, celebrating her 18th birthday by offing an apartment full of heavily armed Mafia types. Fletcher fully embraces the absurdity, sending Daisy and her ruthless best friend Violet (Bledel, more than a dozen years her co-star's senior) into the firefight disguised as nuns, packing shotguns in pizza boxes. With realism out the window, the rules of this imaginary world take some time to absorb, since one's instinct is to keep young ladies as far away from heavy artillery as possible. When they're not blasting bad guys, Violet and Daisy play patty-cake and behave like girls half their age (their getaway car is a tricycle, which suggests perhaps the roles were written for even younger actresses). Holding their guns like Hong Kong action stars, the pair kill without remorse or motive, other than to buy the latest dresses from their teenybopper idol, Barbie Sunday -- at least, that's the reason they accept the assignment that preoccupies them for the rest of the film. After "Hanna," which blended its own surreality with a fairly complex portrait of a child groomed to kill, "Violet & Daisy" feels radically disconnected from recognizable human behavior. Then James Gandolfini enters the picture, bringing a soul to Fletcher's wink-wink style. Though the helmer has provided only one previous job to judge by, it seems safe to assume that most targets either beg for their lives or shoot back. Not this guy. He practically wants to be killed, going so far as to bake the girls oatmeal cookies for their trouble. Most of "Violet & Daisy" takes place in the mysterious man's apartment, where the script must keep coming up with excuses to get the girls alone so Gandolfini's character can offer them the kind of one-on-one advice that just might save their lives. First, they run out of bullets, which gives a rival gang opportunity to drop by while Daisy is unarmed and Violet is off making a supply run -- one that lands her in the middle of an improbable Mexican standoff at the neighborhood hardware store. Later, Daisy steps out, so Violet can take a nap. By this point, most auds will have picked sides in the film's inevitable love-it-or-hate-it divide, but Fletcher doesn't give either camp the satisfaction of pinning down the pic's tone. The laughs, which reach their outrageous peak with something the girls call "the internal bleeding dance," gradually taper off, making room for carefully manufactured emotion. There's a magic-trick quality to the film's construction, in which Fletcher distracts with one hand while subtly adjusting the mood with the other; by the time people catch on that the cartoon has given way to something more sincere, they may already care about the characters. "Violet & Daisy" expands what could have been a single-set play with two strong-impression cameos -- Danny Trejo as the girl's boss and Marianne Jean-Baptiste as a sniper ready to take them out if the girls botch the job -- but lacks a character menacing enough to create suspense. For the story to bloom, Violet and Daisy must stall, and yet, the longer they do, the more ludicrous it seems that anyone would trust two hit-girls to do a hitman's job. Production values are strong, especially Vanja Cernjul's widescreen lensing, which translates some of Fletcher's wilder first-time-filmmaker impulses into clean, classy compositions.Camera (color, widescreen), Vanja Cernjul; editor, Joe Klotz; music, Paul Cantelon; music supervisor, Susan Jacobs; production designer, Patrizia Von Brandenstein; art director, Fredda Slavin; set decorator, Regina Graves; costume designer, Jenny Gering; sound (Dolby Digital), Richard W. Rachel Zoe on New Baby Skyler, Feuding with Rodger and Falling Out with Brad

Rachel Zoe Another season of The Rachel Zoe Project, another new assistant. After amicably parting ways with Brad one year ago, fashion maven Rachel Zoe kicks off Season 4 (premiering Tuesday at 10/9c on Bravo) with a surprising revelation: She and Brad are on the outs. She says he poached clients behind her back after he left. "It's not the first time I've been used. I would say it's going to be the last time, though" Zoe says. Rachel Zoe welcomes baby boy But who has time to dwell on that drama? Zoe's got a new assistant, Jeremiah, but she's also dealing with a new baby, six-month-old Skyler Morrison, the launch of her first fashion line, and a whole new creative team. "There's also a lot of new people on the show and in my life that are pretty incredible - there isn't a lot of fighting and pettiness, I can tell you that! Like, I don't know if there's any!" Zoe says. "OK, maybe a little (laughs). We're all just kind of a family, and it's pretty great. It's the best it's ever been." Below, she tells TVGuide.com about balancing work and Skyler (she takes him everywhere!), why things between her and husband-business partner Rodger are not as bad as they look on the show, and where things stand with Brad: How are you juggling being a mom with your job, which now includes being the head of your own clothing line? Zoe: It's what all the working moms told me before: You just figure it out. And you do! My time is more efficient and more focused now. I don't know exactly why that is, but I think it's because everything that takes me away from my son is something that I need to get done quickly. I find that I'm not really scatterbrained anymore, if that makes sense. Good for Skyler. Helping mom out already! Zoe: He's the greatest thing ever. I do take him everywhere with me unless it involves a long car trip or an environment that I think will be bad for him. He comes to all my meetings, he comes to work with me every day... He's my everything. My heart aches when he's not with me. Who are Skyler's favorite designers? Zoe: He doesn't have any! Whatever is the most comfortable is for him. I have favorite designers for him, though. Bonton, for sure, Gucci Kids is amazing, Dior Kids, Ralph Lauren, Gap... it goes on for days. It's so much fun. He's even rocking over-sized sunglasses like mom already. Zoe: He has really, really light eyes that very sensitive. I always have a hat and glasses for him. But in the case of that photo, it was meant to be a little bit of a joke. [Laughs] There were a lot of paparazzi one day when I was at Whole Foods. I turned around and they were in the window while I was buying produce. So I literally put the glasses on him. It was sort of a joke. He does love having them on, though! Brad Goreski: Without Taylor, "there's not so much tension" Last season, you and Rodger seemed to be doing battle on a weekly basis. There was pen-throwing at one point! Scenes from a Marriage came to mind. How bad - or not bad - did it actually get? Zoe: I mean, Rodger and I have the best relationship of many married couples. We're best friends, and we've been together for 20 years, you know? Literally 20 years. I don't know how to explain it, but Rodger and I, we really don't ever "fight." I call it bickering. My friends laugh at us. We actually are completely dependent on one another and really are happiest when we're together. In the show, when you're filming, there's a lot that doesn't get shown. In the premiere, you two butt heads again when it's time to hire your new assistant. Have you figured out a way to work together in your company where it's less... tense? Zoe: Look, as business partners, we're never going to agree on how we approach business. Rodger is a business-financial-minded person; I'm a creative person. Very often, we're going to be far apart on things. But I almost think if that wasn't the case it would be very strange. You need both. He's much more practical-minded and I'm much more, 'Oh, it's going to be fine.' I run myself and my business pretty much on my gut instinct. [When we hired my new assistant], he'd be like, "Well, I don't know if he's the most experienced," blah, blah, blah... Tell me what you saw in Jeremiah, because he didn't appear to be as qualified on paper as the other candidates you interviewed. Zoe: The thing that I really look for in people is enthusiasm and excitement and, not to sound really sappy, that fire in their eyes. When you meet people who are very jaded and are like, "Whatever, whatever, whatever," I think, "If this is how they are coming in, this is not good." Jeremiah had a tremendous attitude, he was really excited to learn and he clearly had great style and great taste. That means a lot to me. The worst thing you could ever get is people who think they know everything. Rachel Zoe and Brad Goreski part ways It's revealed in the first episode back that you and Brad had a falling out after he left the company; you say he poached clients. Right off the bat, in what ways did you feel Jeremiah would be different from Brad and your other former assistant Taylor, with whom you don't speak? Zoe: I wouldn't really even put them in the same sentence. I think everyone is their own individual, but I would say there is no similarity on any level between Jeremiah and Brad and Jeremiah and Taylor. He's a different person entirely. Do you talk to Brad at all? Bravo recently ordered his reality show, It's a Brad, Brad World. Zoe: I don't. We really don't have a relationship at the moment. But, you know, more power to him. Whatever he wants to do is all good by me. You now have your own clothing line, which will be at Fashion Week this fall. How much does that cut into styling and working with individual clients? Zoe: I'm still working with my clients as much, and I still use all the different designers - it's not like I'm putting my line front and center. When I'm wearing my styling hat, it's always going to be like that, and I'm always going to give as much love and attention to styling and to my clients as I always have. Will Skyler be a big part of this season? Zoe: Um, he's not going to be a main focus. I did, in fact, give birth to a child, though, so you'll have to watch and see. Taylor Jacobson: "I don't know anyone who hasn't been supposedly fired by Rachel Zoe" Did your pregnancy make you hesitant to continue filming? Zoe: For sure! But, I mean, the fact is I do have a TV show and I was pregnant and I did give birth to a child. These are the facts and this is a reality show. Kind of hard to hide it for much longer than I did! I got away with hiding it for six months, so... What else can you say about what viewers will see this season? Zoe: It's a very different season than any other season. There's a lot of behind-the-scenes of launching a collection, and the fear and anxiety that goes into that. Also, I think what many women will identify with is working while you're pregnant, and the reality of that. There's a lot of emotion goes with that. Check out a clip from the season premiere of The Rachel Zoe Project (she talks Brad at the 45-second mark): Who comes out on top, Brad or Rachel? Are you excited to see Rachel as a new mom? DreamWorks and Participant Media's holdover The Help remained the No. 1 film early Friday evening, but is now looking at a weekend gross of $10 to $12 million, versus $15 million. Colombiana was in the No. 2 position on Friday, but may not crack $10 million for the weekend, lower than expected. AMC Entertainment, one of the nation's largest theater circuits, has said that theaters in Norfolk, Va., Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C., will close on Saturday, and predicts that numerous New York theaters will be closed on Sunday. The circuit also is closing all New Jersey theaters at 6 p.m. Saturday. And Clearview Cinemas, which operates 57 theaters along the Philadelphia-New York corridor, is closing all of its locations Saturday and Sunday. Other circuits are likely to follow suit, especially as public transportation systems come to a standstill on Saturday in Philadelphia and New York City, making it difficult for employees to get to work. Clint Eastwood Says He'll Keep J. Edgar's Sexual Orientation 'Open to Interpretation'

Oh, great. Just when we thought Armie Hammer’s kiss with Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic was going to be explosive, Eastwood himself is confirming that he’s leaving the first FBI director’s sexual orientation “open to interpretation.” I know a certain TV personality who might have damning evidence to the contrary. Eastwood says that the rumored affair/relationship between Hoover and his Associate FBI director Clyde Tolson isn’t exactly a sure bet: “Some people might say [they] were just inseparable pals. Or maybe it’s a love story without being gay, I don’t know. But it’s very interesting, the way [Dustin] Lance [Black] laid out the script. It was nicely written. It didn’t go to the obvious.” First of all, Tim Gunn told us that during his childhood, he’s pretty sure he talked to J. Edgar Hoover while he was dressed up as Vivian Vance. That doesn’t make J. Edgar Hoover gay, but that does mean he, y’know, dresses up as Vivian Vance. Makes you think J. Edgar Hoover had firm answers about his own sexual orientation, and none of the ambiguity that Eastwood describes. Plus, J. Edgar Hoover was a real person, not a literary character. Can we stop pretending there’s anything to “interpret” about whether he preferred to sleep with men? Mind you, there’ve been plenty of biopics featuring main characters whose sexual preferences remain nebulous: For instance, in 1977’s Julia, Jane Fonda, as playwright Lillian Hellman, attacks a restaurant patron who questions her relationship with the titular activist. The difference between the ambiguity in that movie and in the ambiguity in J. Edgar is how that gray area relates to the public perception of the real-life subjects. Lillian Hellman is a fascinating figure for reasons other than her rumored romances, but I’d argue that J. Edgar Hoover’s (allegedly) closeted behavior is central to his intrigue. I can’t see how the movie will function without fully exploring his emotional side, but whatever: Maybe we’ll still get an “interpretable” Armie Hammer kiss out of it! Or a couple of knowing stares! Or some fancy, arguably gay lighting! Clint Eastwood Says Hoover’s Sexuality ‘Open to Interpretation; [HitFix]
